TODAY’S DEADLINE FOR VOTER REGISTRATION – MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND ALASKA

By M. Kita Williams – Civilrightsagenda.com

TODAY…YES A SATURDAY… IS THE DEADLINE AND FINAL DAY to submit POSTMARKED voter registration applications in Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, and Alaska according to the Democratic National Committee’s voter registration information site, www.iwillvote.com.

State requirements vary.  Take Mississippi for example.  The DNC’s site reports the Mississippi Secretary of State’s policy that; “Your voter registration application must be postmarked or received no later than Saturday, October 4, 2014 (30 days before Election Day). Note that the registration deadline is 30 days before Election Day, but that day falls on a Sunday”.  There is no indication that Mississippi offers online voter registration. Are there any types of official state agencies open in South Carolina today where people can have their applications “received”?  It doesn’t clearly say.  The safest bet would be to print the required voter registration form(s), or if you don’t have a printer, to pick up a voter registration form at your nearest public library AND make a copy of the form of ID that the state is requiring, using either your printer or a copy machine at the library, then head to the post office ASAP with the correct address of your municipal or circuit court.

(It is typically required that voter registration forms are to be made available at public libraries and even post offices.)

Nevada’s state requirements are more flexible, “If you register by mail, your application must be postmarked no later than Saturday, October 4, 2014.  If you are registering in person or online, you must submit your application no later than Tuesday, October 14, 2014 (the 3rd Tuesday before Election Day).  If you have a Nevada-issued photo ID card or driver’s license, you can register to vote online here.”  To mail your voter registration application today, the NV Secretary of State’s website requires that you complete an online form, then mail it along with a copy of your ID to the county clerk or voter registrar corresponding to your county.

(It is typically required that voter registration forms are to be made available at public libraries and even post offices.)

The rules in South Carolina read, ” Voter registration applications must be postmarked or received no later than Saturday, October 4, 2014.  You can register to vote online here. You must have a valid driver’s license or identification card issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles in order to register online.”  These instructions are confusing.  Can someone still register online today in order for their application to be received?  With a deadline of today, it is recommended that after viewing the states requirements, to print a SC voter registration form, make a copy of your required ID After visiting the South Carolina State Election Commission’s website.  If you do not have a printer, your local public library should have voter registration forms on hand.  You can also make a copy of your ID at the library, then head to post office and mail to the address of your county board of voter registration.
